“RAGGING IN ANY FORM INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE CAMPUS IS BANNED”
Vide Hon’ble Supreme Court of India Orders on SLP (Civil) 24295 and 24296 of 2004- University of Kerala v/s Council, Principals of Colleges, Kerala and others, the senior students who are involved in ragging junior students may be given the following punishment:
FORMS OF RAGGING | PUNISHMENTS |
1. To address seniors as ‘Sir’ | Cancellation of admission |
2. To perform mass drills | Suspension from attending classes. |
3. To serve various errands | Withholding/withdrawing scholarship/ fellowship and other benefits. |
4. To do menial jobs for the seniors | Debarring from appearing in any test/examination or other evaluation process. |
5. To ask/answer vulgar questions | Withholding results. |
6. To look at pornographic pictures to ‘Shock’ the freshers out of their innocence. | Debarring from representing the institute in any national or international meet, tournament, youth festival etc. |
7. To force to drink alcohol, scalding tea etc. | Suspension/expulsion from the hostel |
8. To force to do acts with sexual overtones | Rustication from the institution for period varying from 1 to 4 semesters. |
9. To force to do acts which can lead to physical injury/ mental torture or | Expulsion from the institution and debarring death from admission to any other institution. |
10. To strip, kill etc. | Fine up to Rs. 25,000/- |
11. To do other obscenities | Rigorous imprisonment up to three years. |
While the first 10 types of punishments can be awarded by the appropriate authority of the institution itself, the last punishment can be awarded only by a court of law.
In case any fresh student becomes a victim of ragging by his/her senior/s, the incident should immediately be brought to the notice of the Head/Principal.
